Robert A. Ventresca

I am a Professor of History at King's University College at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada.  I am a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, and also serves on the Committee on Ethics, Religion and the Holocaust at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

I earned a doctorate in modern European history from the University of Toronto in 2000.

My research and writing straddle various areas of history and contemporary issues. I have been published on a diverse range of topics, from popular religious devotion in the early Cold War, to the contours of modern Catholic social thought, to the history of papal diplomacy to, most recently, the Catholic Church and the Holocaust.

My current research, teaching and public scholarship interrogate Catholicism’s role and responses to Nazism-Fascism in the era of the Holocaust. This work contributes to a growing comparative scholarship on the role that religion and religious institutions played in war and genocide in the 20th century.

I am a General Editor of the Cambridge History of the Papacy (in progress).  This is a monumental, four-volume history of the papacy from its origins to the present-day.

I am also currently writing a new book for Cambridge University Press on the Vatican and the Holocaust that will be based on newly released documentation from the Vatican archives.

I was appointed Academic Dean (Interim) of King's University College, my alma mater, in May 2022.  As Dean, I am responsible for more than 300 faculty members and for 25 professional administrative officers and staff.  I oversee all aspects of strategic academic planning, including the development and management of degree programs and educational policies at King’s in affiliation with Western University.  I'm also a member of the university's executive leadership team and work closely with the President's Office to implement institutional strategic priorities, as well as manage day-to-day operations and public outreach.
